I would like to make a bowl on my lathe and made on a long time ago in high school. I was looking for one of those plates that you screw the block of wood to and cant find one anywhere. Also do all lathes have the same size threads on the spindle? Thanks for everyones help

Not all lathes have the same size/thread for a faceplate. (Most centers use one of two sizes of tapers, but faceplates don't mount with a taper.)

A good woodworking shop should be able to find you one that will fit your lathe, if you can provide them the make/model. Depending on the depth of your lathe (distance between the center of the spindle and the top of the rails) - usually 6-8 inches, more on better lathes, you will be limited as to the diameter of your bowl on the inside of the lathe. Most lathes have a threaded end on the spindle extending out the end of the lathe, where you can mount your faceplate and have more freedom with the size. Turning on the outside means that your normal tool rest won't work, and you will need a stand to mount your tool rest. Again, most good woodworking shops can help you.

Try www.woodturnerscatalog.com What you're looking for is a face plate. You need to know what size thread your lathe has.
Search the site above for "faceplate" they have a few options.
