I have a 3 year old Armstrong Ultra 8 oil furnace. The furnace seems to run fine. My concern is a white powdery substance that is accumulating on the outside of the vent pipe. It seems very acrid and is flaking off and dropping down on the furnace and anything else in the area. What is going on? Thanks for any insight you may be able to provide.

The only thing I can think of here. Is the vent pipe a galvanize pipe? lots of time after a time the galvanize will like flake off some.

It is sulfer deposits from the fuel oil, sounds like your'e stack temperature may be too low, and or the furnace hasn't been cleaned since new. Call a tech before the heating season gets going and make sure it is fired at the correct rate.

Thanks for the responses. I forgot to mention that there is a strong odor of fumes and sometimes a little smoke in the room where the furnace is located. Any thoughts?

Yes, Make sure it is fired at the correct rate, and make sure the chimney is not plugged

That oil burner should be serviced every year to make them run right and save fuel. that can be why you have smoke
