Greetings. Tried to turn on Bryant 90 Plus (aka Carrier 350MAV) gas furnace yesterday for first time this season. Hot surface ignitor (HSI) did not ignite. HSI looks okay. Checked pressure switch. 26 volts at 1 terminal and 0 volts at the other. Pulled tube from leading pressure switch that comes from draft inducer. Felt no suction with inducer running. Error code 31.

This morning I checked the vents, which are located on the house sidewall, and found bird nesting material packed in 1 of the vents. The vent makes a 90 degree turn. Any tips for cleaning nesting material from vent? I am hoping that all will work after I clean the nesting material out. My hypothesis is that the pressure switch remains in the wrong position because the nesting material is restriction air flow.

Any thoughts?

Check out this site: http://www.tinkertakeoff.com/article.htm?intRecID=6879. This is an article about a product to help with your nest problem. It is also related to your pressure switch problem. Another website is www.ecaproof.com where there is a picture of the product and a picture on the site with the product on a side wall of a house. This site does not sell to the public, but there is a site that does. It is www.pvc-cap.com. Hope this helps you. As far as getting the nest out of the pipe, I am not sure I can help you there, except to try a way to dig it out with something that is flexible and maybe has a hook on it.

get Error Code 31, and the pressure switch shows 0 volts, and the fan does not appear to move air, should I replace the inducer and see if that fixes it? Strategic advice on replacement/repair logic will be appreciated. Thx.

After nest is dislodged from pipe, you need to reset the furnace by disconnecting the power source to the furnace. Wait about 30 min. for the board to reset and then plug back in the power to the furnace. This should allow the pressure switch to start back up, based on what has been told at this piont. The computer has to reset itself. This is where you should start. As far as the pipe obstruction goes, make sure it is completely clear of any debrie. The best thing to do would be to cut the pipe at the 90 and make sure all debrie is clear. Then glue a new 90 on in the upward direction and put a vent cap on it. I have them on my roof, and have for two years. I have no problems with environmental elements or squirrels or birds. We have a lot of squirrels in my area. They are well worth the money. Also, I have heard of kids putting rocks in the pipes coming from the side walls. This would eliminate that problem as well. Glad to be a help.

I cut the vent pipe, cleaned the bird nest out, and started the furnace. Everything worked fine.

Glad i could help; you probably already know this, but just in case, make sure to change your filter every 30 days or so to keep to system from shutting down on a error.. (system lock out.) take care and stay warm..
