I have a furnace with a standard pilot. The pilot is on but the unit will not fire up when the thermostat is turned to heat. There is a click at the thermostat but nothing happens. I have wired across the red-white and it makes no difference. The blower works if I turn the switch from auto to fan. Any help will be appreciated.

Youu have a meter to check power going to the gas valve?
Make sure the gas valve is "ON", not pilot.

and if you read 24volts at the gas valve, then you need a new valve.

Set the meter around 120 volt AC range. and put the probe on the gas valve where the wires meet.

So I touch one probe to each of the 2 white wires on top of the valve?

Find the transformer and see if it has 24V

It seems the transformer is behind a metal case. I think this may be beyond my comfort zone on electricity. So what are the possibilities I am looking at on the repair? Thanks
