I have an air compressor that I bought back in 1968 that no longer builds up pressure. Is it possible to rebuild it and if so where do I get the information on how to do it. This air compressor is a 220 volt unit that pumps 7.5 CFM. Bought it at Sears.

Did this start suddenly or over a long time? Might pay to remove head(s)and check reed valves to see if they are worn or have debris preventing them from seating. While head is off check cyl bores for ring ridge along top of cyl, check cyl walls for scratches, etc. Being that old it may just be worn out.I think Northern tool sells replacement compressors. I just wish you could still buy a home compressor that would last that long!!!!
Hope this helps,
Mike

If it turns freely, then, as Mike said, the problem is most likely in the head (compressor's). In over 30 years, the intake valve must have accumulated enough dirt and carbon deposits to keep it from fully closing during the compression stroke. Take a look. Can be cleaned or replaced along with a new head gasket.

Thanks guys I have never had a compressor apart but I will pull the head and see if something is gumed up or dirty. That has been a really good air compressor.
