Painting - To Prime or Not To Prime

I'm not sure whether to prime the whole outside of my house before repainting it. I know that when I prepare it for repainting if any bare wood is exposed to prime it. But, I've got a neighbor who primed his whole house before repainting it. Over the years when I've painted my home I've never primed the whole house before repainting; and, I've never noted any problem.

I'm interested in hearing what professional painters have to say.

Generally it isn't neccesary to prime the whole house. About only time you would need to prime the painted areas is if they are chalky and that is better resolved by washing it off.

there are a few times I recomend priming the entire house, but that is ussually to solve problems. for example, if you have cracking paint everywhere I woudl recomend scraping, sanding, adn priming with peel stop or some other type primer. However, if your paint is in relitivly good condition, i.e. not cracking or peeling everywhere then scrape and sand where it needs it and just prime the bare wood. the rest just needs a good cleaning first.
