I have a White Westinghouse chest freezer (model FC162LTW9) which is hard pressed to freeze. It has had trouble cooling lower than the upper twenties for some time. I unplugged and opened it to defrost last Saturday and plugged it back in Wednesday evening. It still doesn't cool lower than the upper twenties. I have it set to maximum at the present time. AFAICT there are no coils to blow dust out of or fans that can fail.
I've got a couple more calls to make tomorrow but the two appliance repair places I talked to today weren't interested in looking at it. They didn't say why (and I didn't ask - just took them at their word).
Is this something that is even repairable (or cost effective to try)?
Thanks
Mike

Sounds like its low on freon. Since it still freezes somewhat it can't be that low, but the freon that was lost is due to a small leak. What I usually do is top it off with freon & tell the customer to keep an eye on the temp. Most times a charge will last for a long time. I would call the local appliance repair shop & get an estimate on charging it & service call price. You will have to decide if its worth charging or getting a new one. Dave

Chances are you have a sealed system problem that would not be worth repairing. In my experience, the compressor is likely the culprit; it is not pumping sufficiently. Is this unit located in a climate controlled enviorment? If not, the compressor can get too hot and it wears out at a faster rate. How old is the freezer?

It's in a basement and maybe 10 yrs old. Basement is dry and reasonably clean. It's taken a few years to get in this state though. I started having to set to to colder settings just to maintain freezing temps about three or four years ago. It wasn't all that old when this first started.
It appears I'll be replacing it anyway. Servicers in my immediate area seem unanimous that it isn't worth repairing. It sure bugs me that so many things are just throw aways these days.

It's too bad your not closer. It sure sounds like a line tap & a few ounces of freon would fix it right up. Don't know why the techs in your area aren't interested in a simple job like that. I like making $60.00 for about 15 minutes of time. Dave

$60.00? I'd go for that over a several hundred dollar freezer.
The two people willing to quote for me said $150-$200(!) and it was pretty clear they didn't really want to mess with it at all (from all the hemming and hawing they did). Most wouldn't even quote.
I guess mid-Michigan (Lansing area anyway) isn't the place to get that kind of work done.

Location does make a difference. Small town here in Central PA.
Lower cost of living than big city. Might be cheaper to send me the freezer by truck to fix & ship back. Lol.
