Our tstat is set at 72 and the other night it got down into the mid 30's. When the heat first comes on the air coming out of the register is very cool (around 75) and then after running for about 5 minutes the temp at the register finally reaches the mid 90's. Is this normal heat pump operation? Does it usually take several minutes to reach the max temp at the registers?

This could be normal. What is age and model of your heat pump? Did aux heat have to come on to satisfy and meet your thermostat setting? When was last time heat pump system was serviced? If operation is different than past heating seasons, then you may want to have unit looked at. By the way, how did system perform in AC mode this past summer? Filters are being changed out regularly?

IMO

Thanks for the reply. I will have to get you the model numbers later but its a lennox heat pump and lennox elite series electric furnace. The aux heat never had to come on assist the heat pump. Filter was changed last week. The last time we had the unit services was this summer and everything checked out fine. No problems cooling this summer.

Is this your first with a heatpump?? If so and you say everything is ok . Yes to start the air will feel cool. We try to tell people to stay away from a register cause it will feel cool . But if you want 78 set it there and it will get there.
