Was wondering if it is possible to put ceramic tile on top of an existing hardwood floor. I am having carpet installed over the living room hardwood fl. and wanna install an entry area of some sort. The area is around 5' X 3.5'. Thanks in advance!

No, it should not be done. The individual planks move separately from each other with changes in climate. This movement is too much for the tile to deal with and it will come loose or crack. The "by the book" recommendation would be to remove the hardwood and replace with BCX grade plywood, then add a sheet of 1/4" cement board, then the tile. There are specifics involved so post back if you want to know more on the subfloor preparation prior to tiling.

What if I use a sheet of luwon(SPELLING??)?? Or just the 1/4 sheet of cement board on top of the hardwood fl?? This floor is easily 40+ yrs old!! Does it still so to speak move after being that old?? Thanks!!

Luan should never be under any ceramic installation. Period. Hardwood will always move. It shrinks, it swells, it cups, it does all that stuff with the changes in humidity each season. Tile and grout accomodate for this movement bu cracking, therefore, it needs to be pulled up. 1/2" ply then cement board. Cement board alone will not isolate the tile from that movement below.

I was at lowes tonight and paid for my carpet! I asked the person in charge of the flooring about it and they said 1/2" exterior rated plywood for the subfloor and then the cement board and tile. Which I sounds like what my friend did for his kitchen fl, but we wanna create some kind of entryway so the carpet don't but up against the door. To us the carpet will just get ruined! It isn't the main entry to the house but we still use it and if people come over we use it for that. Would anyone have any ideas!!?? My uncle has a lot of oak flooring left over from his new house he is willing to give to me but that will be to high for the door to open! So what I am thinking my only way to do this is to cut out the current floor now and put down the plywood and cement board! I just don't wanna do that b/c what if we decide to go back to h/w fl. after 10 15 yrs??!! Carpet will be here in about 3 weeks and I need to have that done b4 they come to install the carpet.

Why not leave the hardwood in the entry way? A lovely rug on top would provide a splash of color.

If you are unwilling to remove the hardwood, that takes ceramic tile out of the equation. If you want to consider going back to the hardwood after 10 or 15 years then that leaves you with carpet, vinyl or the hardwood itself.
