I know my elec/gas heat pump furnace has a dual speed fan, but the only time I've heard the slow speed on is when I am running "fan only". Is the slow speed used in gas mode?

Not sure what you have there, Is it a heatpump with back up electric heat or you said gas furnace??????
But dont know how its wired up. Yes the motor is are should be 3 or 4 speed. Now most of the time it will run on high speed for the AC and if you turn it to fan on at the tstat. When it goes over to heat it should run on a slower speed .
