I have come here so often to ask for help... Annette helped me figure out window coverings for this room as well :)

Okay, I am now at a point where I can order some new carpet. In our home (purchased 3 years ago) there is oatmeal berber throughout the upstairs (we won't talk about the PLAID in the downstais!) It was beautiful when new- I know this as we looked at the house back then but decided to wait on buying. In the meantime, the folks that bought it, had 3 large dogs & 3 large boys! They had the house only 2 years but they were HARD on it. It came up for sale again and we were able to get it. We have fixed up a lot, painted etc., but the carpet had to wait.

We have cleaned the carpet many times- the spots come UP from UNDER the carpet. It makes me sick to think of WHAT is seeping up :(

Anyhow- we really like the red on the walls... there are red & hunter flecks in the couches and it seems to go well. But I have poured over the carpet stores (I have to shop mostly online as we live on an island in AK) and cannot come up with a color I am great with.

In our other home, we had a light gray carpet- it worked well with anything we did there, but will it work well with red?

I have small children in the home yet & also have a childcare in my home- though we are RARELY in the upper part of the home. But I was hoping to find a two tone color that would be fairly neutral. We won't keep the red forever, but would like to not have to change it yet.

Here is the room (you may recognize it Annette!) (smile)

Thank you for any thoughts/ideas you can share!!!

Hi again!

unfortunately, i can't see your pics. (not your fault, i'm blocked)

so........you need carpet to go with red walls and what color sofas & window treatments???? the sofas have flecks of red & hunter, but what are they mainly (beige with the flecks?)?? also, is your woodwork stained or painted? fireplace? other rooms where this carpet will go?

I don't have a problem with the beige color carpet. The color is also in the plaid window treatments. Red, tan, and green make for a good color combination. A darker tan color carpet would also work well. A nylon sisal would provide texture and darker tan color. If wanting some color, take a look at some of the commercial carpet samples. There are many that offer a 'tweed' look and different flecks of color.

The white wall with the white stove could use some color. Do you plan on painting that wall red?

OKAY! with DIYaddict's help, i was able to see a couple pics. yes, i do remember this room! (cute curtains!!!!)

i agree with 12pole....i like the beige carpet. the sofa looks dark (can't really tell what color, but dark) and with the walls a pretty bold barn red, i'd keep the carpet a beige, pretty much like it is. with oak furniture & woodwork, i think tans & beiges are better than grays & taupes. they enhance the warm wood tones better. i'd also agree to go with a tweedy flecked style, maybe a frieze or a berber (anything with texture), since the room is pretty casual, with the buffalo check curtains & all.

i also agree with the comment on the white wall (with stove) - paint it!!! :)

Okay here's the thing.... this room is DARK with it ALL red. When we moved in, it was ALL red (where it wasn't red it was an off GREEN- not exactly hunter) & it was horribly dark. (remember though- we live in Alaska & it is darker earlier)

We painted that wall & the stairwell the cream color as it matches the cream on the windows and in the curtains/pellet stove (though it doesn't look like it in the picture?) wI had plansned to hang a nice hand pieced quilt or something (with similar reds etc.) on the wall to try & tie it in a bit. I just haven't got there yet. Painting that wall will be HARD to do... any other ideas to help it?

The couches... they are a dark green with flecks of the red/green. The house was fairly messy when I took the photo's but I tie them in with the throw pillows I made to match the curtains. (the blue striped afghan is my sons- he just drug it out from his room- it's not normally there)

I don't think a beige would be to bad... but will it go with most other colors when we change the look some day? I know once we get the new carpet- we'll have it for quite some time.

Anyhow... THANK YOU SO MUCH for all your help in this!!!

beige is the King of neutral colors, so yes, it will go with anything you might want to change to in the future.

hanging a quilt on that cream wall would be great! or a gallery of family photos. or larger artwork. anything really. it just looks naked!
