What type of mud do I use for tiling the wall? Is it plastic glue or thinset stuff?

I'm not a tile expert but I think it depends on the type of tile and the surface being tiled. Most tile uses thin set for the adhesive although there is a premixed adhesive that can be used with some wall tiles.
Hopefully one of the tile men will post a better answer later today.

You cant use mastic or any premixed thinsets in a wet area. Use a good modified thinset here.
I assume you are going over cement board.

If I go to lowes or HD should I ask for a specific brand?
Thanks.

If you go to HD they carry custom thinsets. Versabond is there cheapest modified thinset. Its good for what you are doing.
