I have a smoke alarm that has recently started buzzing. It is hardwired and has been installed in my home for 25 years. There is no mfg shown on the device. I cannot seem to get the cover off without a hammer. Twisting, pushing, pulling does not seem to have any affect. Perhaps the cover does not come off. Does anyone know?

Thanks, leftyb

Look for a small arrow for direction but it should be just like a jar lid. Turns counter clock wise to remove.

Look for a small hole or tab to press or insert a key screw driver to press a locking device inside the unit so you can twist it off.

Remember to have someone hold the ladder while you do this.

There may be a slot to insert a small screwdriver allowing the cover to swing open.

A lot of the older models simply twisted onto the screws from the junction box they mount on. If so, paint and accumulated dust may be holding it in place.

At 25 years old, it's about 15 years past the recommended lifespan for most residential grade hardwired smoke detectors.

Pete and MrRon: Thanks for the tips. I will give them a try.

Well, I managed to break the red power on indicator. There are no holes or slots and the cover will not turn, or at least, not for me. Guess I need to call a real handyman which is sure not me. Thanks anyway for the suggestions.

Try this, see if you can press down (I guess up to the ceiling) on it can see if it will twist off.
