I've done three tile jobs, so I'm still fairly new at this but I'm also a creative person and wanted to try something a little more fancy with our master bath. The past three jobs have turned out good but where just square/straight patterns.

Here is the tile layout that I'm planning to do (to scale):

The light brown border is a pre-fab stone border 3x12 that I plan to butt end-to-end to make a solid stone border.

My question is... where should I start? In my mind it seems that I should cut and lay the outer most tiles and the border FIRST. Possibly let them set over night and then start with the diagonals on the inside since I can adjust the right side as necessary to fit. The right side of the layout is where the sink and toilet are so I don't care about symmetry there.

Does my approach sound good - or can the pros/more experienced offer a better approach???

Thanks in advance!!!

A couple things here before you start.

Your diagonal tile layout doesnt look good. Try to lay out the diagonal in such a way that you have only full and half tiles. These small diagonal pieces really dont look good set inside a border. Increase or decrease the border size to fix this.

Dont butt tiles. You need to have a grout joint. You can make the grout joint small if you want but you need grout. Butting tiles sounds like a good idea but its not. The tiles will not but perfectly together and there will be small gaps that all kinds a crud will get into. Additionally its hard enough to get tiles to sit flat to one another with small grout joints. No grout joints will be impossible. You need grout between the tiles.

Square the area in the center of the room where the diagonal tiles will go and snap chalk lines. Set the diagonal tile and fill in the border afterward. You can fudge the border a little bit if need be to make up for any out of square problems with the room.
