Our refrigerator has been dripping water from the vent in the ceiling of it (poss. from freezer?) for a while and now is no longer keeping cool, freezer portion is frosting up on frozen foods...any suggestions to try before we call a repairman?

I'm not sure what exactly causes them to do this, but sometimes they just freeze up solid. Unplug it, and remove the backpanel in the freezer section, and you will probably find that all the cooling fins are frozen solid in ice. Just let it all thaw out (with a little help perhaps), let everything dry out (put a fan so it blows into the freezer) and it should work just fine again.

The water dripping is probably from the drain line to the evaporation pan being clogged, this allows water to stand in the freezer and then drip through the vents to the fridge. If this water stands, then completly freezes over it can block the vents completely, that could cause the cooling problem in the fridge. Let the unit defrost completely by unplugging it overnight with the doors open, or use a heat gun (be sure not to melt any plastic parts), once defrosted blow out the drain line with a turkey baster, air compressor, or a gallo gun if you have one.

Hope that helps
