We had to use the heat for the first time this season last night. When I first turned the heat on the aux heat came on for about 2 minutes. When the heat strips came on there was a slight burnt smell coming out of the vents. Is this normal for heat strips or is it something I need to have checked out? Im hoping it was just becuase its the first time they have come on in several months.

Sounds normal. This happens when it hasn't been used in a while. In fact, you may notice this with both electric and gas furnaces. It's just a layer of microscopic dust. In most cases it smells like a dusty light bulb. If however the smell continues, or smells like burning plastic, then I would have it checked out.
