ack! I thought it would be an easy job, the first few tiles just lifted easily. They were, as it turns out, damp. The tiles in the middle of the room are dry and break easily as I try to remove them. Any suggestions?

Are these ceramic or a stiff vinyl tile? Sounds like a description of removing VAT. With VAT, a heat gun will soften the glue. With ceramic, expect it to break.
