2 year old Heatpump stopped working today!

My parents 2 year old Heat pump stopped working today .. When I turned it on today .. the light on the thermostat came on for a second and it went out … and then the whole system was dead! Nothing works, no heat, no cold, and no fan .. I checked the breakers (turned it on and off) and no luck! Any idea what could cause a sudden stop of the system?. .Could there be a problem with t-stat? The thermostat is original (manual) and about 20 years old … should I go ahead and replace it. If so, do all thermostats have the same number of wires in the back and it is just a matter of taking the old out and attaching the wires to the new one?

Also, is there anyway to short the wires to thermostat to see if the system works before I buy and try to replace it.

Thanks

Look for fuses in the disconnect at the outside unit. If present, check for continuity.

I am moving this post to the heat pumps section. I think you will get better answers there.

Take a voltage tester and see if you have the correct voltage at the fan box and at the condensing unit.

Next check to see if you have 24 volt control power at the control transformer. It could be located at the fan box or at the CU.

Next see if you have 24 volt at the thermostat. Check for R to
G since you are not likely to have a common at the tx. With these two you should be able to read through the fan relay, and still get 24 volt with a tester.

Next try shorting R to G and see if the fan comes on. Then try R to Y1 and see if the CU comes on.

If you are handy with home improvement issues you will most likely find the problem by this point, and the fix will be obvious.

I suspect a short or break in the t stat wire, a bad t stat, or a burnt up transformer or transformer fuse.

Check and see if the fuse on the board is good.

2 years old heat pump you say then this.

Could there be a problem with t-stat? The thermostat is original (manual) and about 20 years old … Why the old tstat????
Even that old most time its not the tstat.
