My kitchen chandelier is on a dimmer switch ( a dial) and a couple days ago the lights started to flicker. The dimmer itself seems to buzz when you get close to it and also the screws holding in the plate cover feel warm. Does the dimmer need to be replaced?

Some of the high-efficiency bulbs can not be used with a dimmer.
Some light fixtures can not use higher watt bulbs.

I have not changed any light bulbs recently. There have not been any problems with this light since I have lived in this house (3 years).

It sounds as if you have an older rheostat type dimmer. You may want to change it to a more modern solid state one with an on/off switch and a dimmer slide.

Thanks for the suggestion - I will look into it - I am sure the dimmer now is original to the house which is about 11 years old.
