I would love to have a slate floor. However, I have read where slate is soft to moderately hard...but can be very hard "depending on the slate".

How does one get hard slate? It will be throughout our downstairs that is a proverbial Grand Central Station. Pets, people...etc.. At this time, there is carpet over a subfloor of good concrete. I want to pull it all up, mainly due to allergens, and have a gorgeous slate floor. Seal it or not? I do not like the polished tile look. I like the staggered sizes and rough slate of multicolored hues. I'm looking at "slating" about 2500 sq. ft. of floor space.

Please educate me so I don't buy something that will flake, crack and die before it's time. Edited to add...thank you for all your advice. There are some real honest, practical geniuses here. My Mr. Wonderful always asks me "What do your friends say? And he would be referring to my incessant reading at DIY :)
