Is it advisable or recommended to put any sort of vapor barrier or thin insulation or anything between the subfloor and the flooring on a first floor with basement underneath? The original floor was just wide planks directly over the joists.

What type of flooring will you be installing on the first floor?

If this is a manufactured product, you might check with the manufacturer to see if your subfloor is substantial enough or if you need an additional layer of subflooring. They should also have specifications on a barrier material between the finished floor and subfloor.
If this wide plank flooring is for lack of a better term "recycled planks" (no offense intended--I really like the look) then you could utilize 15# felt for a barrier between the finished floor and the planks. This would reduce squeaks and cover the cracks in the subfloor.
