Hi, I,ve recently moved into an older house (built mid 1970's) and have removed a ceiling fan from the master bedroom. Unfortunately, I neglected to note the wiring before removal and now I'm a little confused over the correct way to wire my new light fixture. The fixture (a 3-lamp halogen fixture) has 3 white wires, 3 black wires and a ground wire. The mounting box has 3 white and 3 black (each colour twisted together) and a single red wire, along with a bare ground. I'm confused as to how to wire my new fixture as 'colour to colour' results in the light fixture remaining 'on' regardless of the position of the wall switch. Help, please?

I would try hooking the red from the ceiling box to the blacks from the fan, while leaving all the whites together and of coarse all the ground wires together.
If that does not work, post back so we can look deeper into the problem.

Wow, that was quick! Thanks for the advice. Just one thing (I'm a bit slow on the uptake, sometimes) - with the red from the ceiling baox going to the black on the light fixture, and the whites staying together, where do I connect the three black wires I'm left with from the ceiling box? Thanks

Oh I got it - three wire coming in black line , red sw. leg
Red to fixture blacks - fixture whites to box whites, bare wire to bare wire , and leave those blacks in the box alone they are unswitched and sending power to other devices, good for a fan that runs at night but not for your application

twist all the black wires together and push them up into the box before making all the other connections. They are being used to feed the rest of the circuit.
