I am building a free standing deck. It will replace a patio. The deck will go beneath a sliding door. I live in New England, so I am dropping the deck surface 4 inches below the door. This puts me on the bottom row of wood shake siding. If I leave 1 inch gap between the deck and the house, will I need to put flashing beneath the bottom row of shakes?

A "freestanding" deck will need no flashing. You are not attaching it to your house. You will not be disturbing the siding.

Thanks Larry. I was concerned with snow and ice sitting against the cedar shingle siding. I'd rather not apply any flashing if I don't have to.
