Electronic Alarms and Home Security Devices - Which detectors should I buy?

I'm trying to determine which gas detectors to put in my home. I know I want to put a carbon monoxide detector on each level of the house. I'm thinking of buying the Kidde 900-0076-00 Nighthawk Carbon Monoxide Detector. It plugs into an AC outlet and has a battery backup (as well as a digital display).

I'm aware, however, that this will do nothing to warn me about natural gas leaks from my furnace, stove, or dryer. SHould I look into getting a natural gas detector or two as well? How important are these? There don't seem to be all that many available. If I were to purchase them, do I need one on each level, just like the CO detectors, or just one in the basement (where the furnace and dryer are)?

Also, what does everyone think of my choice of CO detector, and do you have recommendations of brands for natural gas detectors (if you recommend them)?

As long as all of your fuel gas connections have been properly installed and tested for leaks, a combustable gas detector is a "nice to have" but is really something of an overkill. Most of the companies that make CO detectors also make CG detectors.

The one thing that you do have to remember about either device is that the sensor element does degrade over time, and the unit or the sensing head will need to be replaced every 5 years or so.

If you do get a CG unit, putting it in the location of the gas using appliances is more than enough, so long as you can hear the sounder.
