First off let me say that my new heat pump is performing better than I expected. For one, it cools faaaar better than my old A/C unit, even the upstairs on my 2 story is cooler.
Secondly, I had a couple of chances these past 2 weeks in Ohio to test the heat pump. Last night it was 49 degrees and heat pump worked very nicely, warming the home rather quickly, and I indeed was pleased with it. It runs, warms the home to proper temp then shuts off and will cycle but not often at all. Works good.
But this morning, I noticed on my thermostat that it "kicked" in a second stage or Stage 1+2. Then after a few minutes this second stage went off. Was this the defrost mode? Was this the heating element running? I THOUGHT for a moment that I saw steam, being ejected from the top of the outdoor unit. (I thought)
So I guess, I want to know if that was stage 2?

AH the smoke "steam" that is what most first time heatpump people run into and call . We try to tell them about the smoke they will see comeing off the outdoor unit sometimes.
When your unit goes into defrost its running just like a AC unit. So as to not blow cold air into the home .Yes the electric heaters come on at that time also

Ed, thanks,
I kind of thought so but wasn't sure.
This thing is really great so far I love it. It cycles mybe every 30-60 minutes or longer depending on the cold. So far only a low of 45 at night.
What can I expect in the teens? Will it run more steady?

Yes . Also the first time it goes in to defrost you might smell it a little like burnt. this is the dust that got on the electric heat coils is all.
