hi
we installed an inground pool last year and we want to use it at night. the pool has a light in it but the patio around it does not.
i was wondering what type of light to use.
the pool is right next to the house.
i could either run wire around pool and put in landscape type lighting (low voltage or not) or i could mount a spot light type to the soffits under the roof of the house. the spot light would be about 30 feet up and about 40 feet away from the sitting area of the patio.
do you think the spot light is better than the other type?
is there another option?

use the low volt lite, so you only lite up only the area you wanted and the fixture is very easy to relocate. i think a spot lite at 30 ft height look very ugly for family swimming pool

Since the pool is next to the house, it might be easier to use 120 volt exterior lighting attached to the house. If you have a patio area on the other side of the pool, the landscape lighting might be easier in that situation.
Either way, be mindful of how the lighting will look not only from the house and patio, but from the pool. The high mounted spot light you mentioned might light up a large area, but would seem harsh when seen from the pool.
You might want to consider puting the lights on a dimmer (more so if they are full voltage and mounted to the house), so you can vary the lighting to suit the situation. You might want to put the lights on more than one switched circuit, for the same reason.
