1) DISCONNECT THE POWER before performing any work on these devices. TREAT the electricity with the respect it deserves. IT CAN KILL YOU.

2) when removing a light/Fan fixture-- Remove ONLY the wires connected to the existing fixture. This will make the re-install (nearly)fool proof.(even though they make better fools everyday).

3) When opening a Light/fan switch---DOCUMENT the location, color of each wire on the switch,BEFORE you disassemble it. Then draw it on paper (or other medium) for reference. Make note of the color of screws, if a three way or some other specialty switch.Identify the wires so you know where they came from and where they should go.READ and understand the instructions that come with all devices.

4) expect a few more questions from the respondants,This is how we find what you need to know.

5) Post back, so we know whether we have helped or not.
Many here spend alot of time trying to help.

Just my thoughts.
Be SAFE. You only have you, and you can't replace your family. DO IT RIGHT.

Very good advice electriclee.

Let me just add that trial and error is not the proper approach to electrical wiring. Leave trials to properly equipped testing laboratories.

Post questions in web forums, get books on electrical work, conduct web searchs for the required info, check with the equipment mfg about proper wireing methods, talk to knowledgeable people about the proper way, consult with your local building dept, etc.

And, when you go to do the work be sure you are doing it correctly.
