I have a Bryant Furnace/Heat Pump (it must be about 15-17 yrs old). The model number for the heat pump is 690ANX018000AAAA. This year, while the AC was switched on, the system started to shut on/off repeatedly. It is hard to tell if it is trying to shut off or if it is having problems staying on. Most of the time it is fine, but this switching on and off repeatedly has increased in frequency and severity. I thought this might be electrical since I can hear But I cannot be sure.
I did have local rep visit to see what if anything could be done. He said that it could be a relay that is going bad, but that would take to much time/effort/money and suggested we buy a new unit. He did swap an electrical switch in the actual heat pump, but that didn't do anything to solve the problem.
Can anyone help?

That said it all I think Id get a new tech to look at it. 15 to 17 years is about the life of a heat pump or AC. You can have a lot of ifs ifs ifs here. Does just the compressor go off?, just the fan outside.?, low freon switch?

Well ... sorry for not responding sooner. It has taken some time to run through a few things.
1. I replaced the thermostat ... problem persists.
2. The problem only presents itself when it is trying to shut the unit off ... switching on/off/on/off for a while ... then finally off.
3. I have replaced the filter ... problem persists.
4. "rep" / "tech" did charge a puny fee as he replaced a switch out in the heat pump ... that did nothing to help. He did not put a volt meter anywhere near the unit. He was reluctant to trouble shoot the electronics at all.
5. The hole for the wires are puny ... can't hardly get much if any insulation behind there.
6. The fan inside is what keeps flipping on/off ... I will check in the compressor and fan outside. "Rep" said the freon level was ok.
6. The problem is present when cooling and heating.
Sooo ... it sounds as if I should start looking into a new system? Should I try to find another "rep"/"tech"? Should I simply replace the entire system or just the heat pump? Any more thoughts?

When a unit is that old Id say get a new one. Yes youneed inside unit and the outside unit. I sure would not have any of the tech that you have had there put a new on in. Get 3 bid for the job for sure . Stay with R22 and if you will stay in the home for 10 years or more get the good stuff a SEER15 or over and a V/S blower
