I am building a sewing center from melamine laminated on to MDF. I read somewhere that there is a special type of screw that is designed specifically for use in MDF material. Can you give me the name of these types of screws? Also, are they readily available from Lowes or Home Depot, or do they have to be special ordered?

The type of fastner you use depends on the application. I'm unaware of any screws made specifically for MDF. I do recommend that you pre-drill or drill a pilot.

Best wishes.

Search for "confirmat" screws - those are the type normally used to assemble MDF cabinet carcasses. Woodworker's Supply, Rockler, etc carry them. Home Depot carries them in very small (expensive) quantities, in the section where they have miscellaneous furniture parts like shelf pins, nail-on glide feet, etc.

Predrilling is a requirement for MDF.

I also have had a box of "particle board screws" floating around for quite a while - at least that's what the box label says. Unlike the Confirmat screws, these are much more like wood screws. They appear to have a deeper thread, but very low pitch. The manufacturer was Crown Bolt. I've not seen these screws since I bought them way back when - the box has a mfg date of '97
