Okay here is my situation. Purchased a chandelier from Habitat for humanity store, no instructions attached. Appears in good condition. Ground wire, lamp type wiring.
My question:
how to determine which wires to connect?
My home is 30 years old. Just purchased, ugly chandelier not connected. Chandelier box contains two black wires, two white wires, two red wires.
they are connected with twist-on connector as follows:
white and black
red and black
white and red
Let me know if you would like to see pics. All other chandelier/lighting fixtures have just the basic black wire, white wire, gound so this is really throwing me off with red and all wires connected together.
Thanks!
Melissa

Let's do the picture thing so we can see what you are seeing. Also, remove the cover plate of the switch and let us see the wiring on it, too. Is the outlet controlled by more than one switch?

Okay here is a link of the picture i took, of all the wires. I'm trying to hang a chandelier with lamp style wiring and exposed ground wire.
thanks!

If you also showed the wiring from the switch(es), some of the experts here could help you out much more easily.

There is a single switch and then there is some kind of dimmer switch in the room. Here's a few pictures of the dimmer type switch:

Nothing was hooked up before. Missing plate on dimmer type switch so I'm not even sure if it has anything to do with lighting.

I looked at the pictures and from what I can tell there is some non standard wiring in this setup.
The circuits need to be traced out and a drawing of what is existing needs to be made.

sounds like I need to hire an Electrician? The picture of the dimmer type switch was taken but i'm no sure if it has anything to do with the lighting. bummer! No wonder why the former owner did not have the anything hooked up, she probably could not figure it out herself and didnt bother to mention it.
