Hi all... I recently bought a home with this system in it, and would like to know if I would be able to use the alarm system in an unmonitored situation? I have the manual for it; but am a bit confused. I tried to reset to defaults, and now none of the keypads seem to light up.
So first, can the system be set to be used as an alarm that works, but just does not call ADT and send the proper help? I have no desire to use their service, but I own the equipment, and it would be of use I guess....
If this can be done, can some kind person point me in the right direction?

Using the default command was a bad idea. All you needed to do was to disable the dialer by erasing the phone numbers.
That said, what you will need to do is depends on how many keypads you have, and what kind they are. It takes at least one conventional keypad to reset the system once you have wiped out all of the settings.
You will also need to figure out what all of your zones are supposed to be.
Basically, you have found a chore for yourself.

I still have access with one keypad, and while the other two are dark...they beep and light up. Also, it goes into the mode where it will chime and say a zone was triggered, so it seems the motion sensors are working, and the doorways maybe are. Also can make it trip and scream bloody murder, loud as all get out. I have full access via the one keypad, and can enter codes.
What would I need to do to make things right?
Thanks for the quick reply and any help you may give, I appreciate it alot. I didn't mean to make more work....at first I was just trying to shut up a 3x daily warning including 2-3 am wake ups of 'low battery', and then got interested in making it work for me. I had no idea what the codes were to arm it or disarm it, and it never did *anything* useful before. Now I can atleast have it warn audibly about sensors tripping ect...so maybe more work, but actually improved.
Curiosity: Where all good plans start (and go awry) I guess!

Defaulting...great if you're looking to induce headaches.
When you defaulted the system, one of the things you did was reset the hardwire zones to factory settings. So even though they "work", they're not working correctly.
Don't worry about your keypads too much, when you dumped the memory you just erased the addresses of your other KP's. Simple fix.
I've actually got a step-by-step for a very quick and basic setup that I'll provide you tomorrow when I get off work, unless someone else steps it up.
*edit* Start it off by opening every door and window you have one at a time, going to the keypad to jot down what you opened and what number is coming up, and then closing said zone. You may get multiple zones on the same number (like 2 dining room windows or you front and garage door on same zone) but that's perfectly fine. Yes, it's time consuming, but it's your own fault :)

Sorry man, I've been the on-call tech this week and had a couple jobs that just sapped any semblance of energy away. If you're around tomorrow then send me a PM and if you've got Yahoo or AIM I'll do a live step by step setup with you.

I been trying to get this set...still not working right, are there any online tutorials, so I don't have to bother you good people? I am a computer tech, so it's not about being not technology inclined, just I have zero experience with these things.
I could not get my windows to report in what zone they are in, I am guessing because a zone expander box is in there?? Ademco 4229. Only the doors and motions trip the system. I don't think the system was ever programmed or in service; so I don't think I necessarily was the one who made it not work, in fact, now I finally can get it to chime and do stuff where before it did nothing but blink.
I am in a hurry now, because we had a --major-- crime (5 police vehicles, a crime scene van and the works) across the street yesterday, and suddenly security seems important again...funny how that works huh?
Thanks again for the help here, good to know the net still has some truly good citizens....

Sites like this are as close to an online tutorial as you'll get.
Ok, first of all, do you have the alphanumeric keypad? I suspect that you cannot, at your current level of system knowlege, program the zone settings with the fixed language keypad.
The 4229 is hardwired into the system, and will work automatically, the problem you have, is that the defaulted settings on all of the zones above 8 is "disabled".
So lets start with a clear listing of what keypads and expanders are attached to the system.
