Im looking for some R25 Flood Bulbs for some recessed cans im installing. I have found that these bulbs are very hard to find. Looked at 3 different Lowes and 2 different Home Depots. I would rather not use the PAR30's if I dont have to. Is there any other "R" bulbs I can use?? Maybe R20?? The box says use R25 or PAR30... Does anyone know where one can find these at local retail stores. I really don't want to order them online if I dont have to. Thanks!

very simply put, the number in the light is the diameter of the bulb in 1/8th's of an inch. so a R30 is 3 3/4 in diameter.
I don't see a reason why you would not be able to use a smaller diameter bulb than the r 30's or even the 25's.
I went to Phillips and Sylvania's websites and found absolutely no R or PAR 25 bulbs listed in their catalogues.

Inside the cans it calls for MAX 100W R25 or 75W PAR30. I used 50W R20's. They look great! Questions is will this cause any problems??

since the lamps you choose are smaller in size and wattage there should be no problem.
To be sure it is a good idea to check with the mfg. Do you know the modle of the can and trim. We could try to google the fixture and see what the mfg says.

I would suspect by the two max sizes listed, the manuf is concerned with cooling airflow space. In the sizes you listed, the higher wattage lamp is smaller diameter and would allow more airflow past the lamp than the higher wattage but larger (physically) bulb.
The reason a max lamp is listed is for purposes of either heat or current. In this case, you would be drawing less current and producing less heat from the lamp so I would think you are good to go.
I don't remember seeing a min size lamp listed for too many fixtures.

Thanks nap for helping clear that up.
I was only concerned about the size lamp to size trimm and having enough room there for heat so as to not hurt the light trimm.
Glad to have ppl like you arround to help out answer some of these questions. everyones experience is slightly different. Often times it seems yours is more suited to the question at hand than mine.

This is all part of the heat thing. I have had track lights and cans with a plastic inner trim that just were trashed from the heat.
Heat also shortens life of the bulb . Had a bunch of those customers as well. I actually drilled vent holes in the top of the track light fixture to release the heat. It even worked!
