Has anyone out there ever removed a single recessed light and replaced it with a ceiling fan??

No I have not, but I have been doing electrical work for about 20 years, and I have done enough similar things to maybe help if there is more to your question.

I belive the wiring will be easy enough...white to white, black to black, ground to ground....my real question is will the recess lighting hole be too large to cover with the base of the ceining fan...if so, is there an easy solution short of doing extensive wall board repair.....

The hole from the recess can will definatly be larger than the fan canope.

buy or make a round bit of wood, a scusioon if you will to cover the hole.

Make sure to install an old work fan box/brace for the fan support.

As is usual, keep the general rules ... turn off power, ... label and mark all wiring so you can put it back.. etc.

I removed the recess light, installed a fan support brace, covered the slightly larger ceiling hole....and it works!!
