A few days ago, while the shower head was functioning (perfectly fine), the lever that divert the water to the tub filler was pressed down. Since then, it is impossible to lift the diverter so the shower head may function. The lever of the diverter will not stay in position allowing the water to exit through the shower head. The faucet is American Standard and it is a 2 valves shower and tub filler faucet. Any ideas on how to repair this thing would be helpful… oh and one more thing, I am a beginner at home improvement… it’s my first home! Thanks.

I am assuming that the diverter is on the tub spout. If so, it is easier to replace the spout than it is to try to repair the diverter. Look under the spout where the spout meets the wall. If there is a slot in the spout, there is an allen set-screw that holds the spout to the supply pipe. (also at least one "O" ring for a seal). Remove the allen screw and twist the spout while pulling outwards to remove the spout. If there is no slot, the spout screws onto the water supply pipe and can be removed with a wrench or large channel-locks by turning counter-clockwise. Take the spout with you when you purchase a new one so you know the thread depth is the same on the new spout as it is on the old one. Use teflon tape or pipe dope compound on the threads and screw the new spout on. Then caulk around the end where it meets the wall to prevent water from entering the wall. Good luck.
