I recently moved to a new apartment where I was informed by the landlord that the house was prewired for any security installation device to be setup and I could get the security setup done as I wanted to. This is the first time ever that I am in a house where I can install a security system. I decided to get a keypad for the house first. On searching on ebay, I found a cheap one called the Ademco 6137b (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300027411962). I bought this one from the seller for $20 and after it was delivered, I tried to hook it up with the wiring that was provided near the front entrance of the house using the installation instructions that were mentioned on the leaflet provided with the keypad. The only things in the box were the keypad, the single page manual and 2 screws and a few stickers for the keypad.
Hooking it up was pretty simple, and was just a matter of joining the 4 wires to the keypad. After this was done, I waited for some display on the display panel, but nothing came up. I am stuck up at this point and I am not sure if I know how to advance beyond this point.
Do I need to provide external power or install a battery to boot it up as I was under the impression that the red and black wires carried enough voltage to start the keypad. Can anyone provide me any pointers using which I can get the keypad working ?

Couple things you need to put out first before we can help.
First, the landlord said it was prewired for security, but did you actually check in your house for the alarm panel itself? The system is obviously much more than just a keypad: you've got a junction of wires and circuit board(s) in your control panel (or the can).
If you do not have a system, then that's a whole other can of worms we'll need to deal with.
If you do find your system, open the cover on it and look at the diagram on the inside (if applicable). Do you see any brand names like Radionics, Ademco, Westec, ect? Provide us with any brand/model info or serial numbers you come across. A digital camera shot posted here would help quite a bit as well.
Also, when you hooked your red and black wires together, you should have heard the keypad put out about a 3 second tone to acknowledge it's been powered up. If you didn't hear that, you've got wiring cut or disconnected, or going back to the first point, don't even have a system installed.
Say all that is in order and let's go on the assumption it is an Ademco system. You then have to program your keypad. Do this by applying power to your keypad then within 45 seconds or so hold the 1 and 3 keys down simultaneously. You will then have a 2 digit number flashing at you. If you've got a V20 that number needs to be 31; if it's a Safewatch3k or variant of, that number will have to be 16 (I'm guessing this is the only keypad in the house; will have to be another value if not). If it's a Vista 10, I *THINK* it's a 01 or a 31 depending on the setup, someone with a manual handy can verify that.
Let us know what you come up with so we can help you out a lil more, mate.
