Hello:
I have an American Standard toilet which is about 12 years old. Lately it's been making a running noise which I've had to correct by turning off the water supply as the noise is unbearable.
After researching the Internet, I determined the most likely cause was a worn out flapper as upon touch, my fingers were darkened.
I replaced the flapper hoping this would fix the problem, but the noise still persists. I did some further research and tried loosening and tightening the screw that holds the float ball to make sure the water level was at the water line but this did not work either.
I don't know what else to check and am going to have to resort to shutting off the water supply in the meantime.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

First, I would check to see if the new flapper is working. You can put food coloring in the toilet tank, and it should not seep past the flapper into the bowl. If the fill valve (thing with the float) is not shutting off completely, the water will rise above the overflow. In that case, go to the hardware store and buy a Fluidmaster 400 fill valve & replace the existing fill valve.
Oops - you said American Standard. Depending on the model, a Fluidmaster 400 may not work, in which case you would need to get an American Standard replacement fill valve.
In any event, check the flapper first.

Thank you Steve. I have found out what the problem is. The fill valve keeps on pouring water thinking that the toilet has been flushed. I tried repositioning the floatball but that did not work. Look like I'm going to have to replace the unit
