Plumber just changed seal(?) on my toilet due to possible small leak. No water in my bathroom; some coming in my downstair neighbor's ceiling. The plumber used putty instead of a wax ring because he said he feels it lasts longer. Some people disagree. And I don't know the difference. Help! Mistake?!

Plumbers putty is to pliable to use in place of a wax ring. He should have used a higher profile wax ring with a bell, not the plumber's putty.

Many years ago where I live putty was banned for setting toilets, it will cause leaks, not prevent them, putty dries out, wax dosen't.
