Our tub faucet has a little metal "thing" that you lift to divert the water to the shower. I imagine this is extremely common...
Ours got unscrewed and now we can't figure out how to get it back in. We can't figure out what it is supposed to screw into. We can feel something inside there, but can't seem to find a place for the "lift for shower" thing's threads to make contact.
Help!

While poking your finger up the spout, you should feel a plate. If you move the plate, you should be able to simultaneously place the threaded end of the diverter into the hole and engage it into the plate. Of course if all else fails, you could just replace the entire spout with a diverter built in. Post back with results.

We've each tried moving that plate around and can't get the bolt to connect. I'm afraid of him monkeying around in there, and then we'll have neither a tub nor a shower. He thinks the spout just screws off the wall and a new one will screw in...tell me it's not just that simple (or that it is), please.

Many spouts do simply unscrew. Some, however, are slipped onto a copper pipe, and are secured in place with a set screw. If you see an opening at the base of the spout, right next to where it touches the wall, look inside there for a setscrew that needs to be loosened. Otherwise, just grab the whole spout with a big wrench and turn it off. You will mangle it up a little, but you are going to replace it anyway.

He told me that, but I didn't believe him...Thank you!

I don't mean to gain focus on my problem but being new to forums, Im not sure where this reply will end up. My 'thingy' on top on the spout just turns around and around, I can't tighten it or losen it. But my problem is, that by pulling this knob it fails to divert the water to the shower head. However if I have the water on FULL blast then it trys to divert, but a lot of the water still drips from the spout. Reducing the flow it still comes out the shower slower but again most still comes out of the spout at the same time. What causes the water to divert in the first place? I can't find any blowup plans of this area.
