hi,
i will be replacing two garage windows/ 50 yr old single pane,
with glass block.
have read various online installation help sites.

was curious if anyone has experience with installation of
glass blocks.

would like info on what not to do.

advantages to silicone grout vs other grout.
advantages to pre assembly

They provide light, privacy and great security!!

I would go with pre-assembled panels if you have never worked with them. A little more money, but fast and easy if the opening is not to big.

Building in place is very possible and may give your more satisfaction in the end.

On the last basement remodel I did, I used the kit provided in Lowe's and did a 32 x 32 window complete with silicone caulking in less than 35 minutes. Really easy to do, just make sure, since it is an exterior window you provide water runoff and prevent infiltration.
