I have an old, oddly built, definitely non-standard, probaby not up to code, bathroom and it has a two handle stall shower. One of the handles broke off leaving behind a stem that ends in a small square tip. My local hardware store (which is not too impressive) does not have any faucet handles that will attach to that kind of stem. Is there some sort of adapter and/or handle that will attach to this stem that I can buy elsewhere online? Or should I just break out the JB Weld and permanently attach a handle?

Most of the larger stores will sell univeral type stem adapters and handles. You will have to remove the square thingy and shop for an adapter that will fit that spline configuration, and handles that will please the eyes.

Thanks for the quick reply and to know that there are universal adapters out there is great. But remove the square thingy? I don't see how, I mean it looks like the tip end of the whole stem. Can you explain further?
And actually, is it really necessary? If the adapter is universal, I mean.
Believe me, I could care less what the handle looks like - I want functional.

The square block is usually held in place by a small allen head screw on the side. BUT, you are right, who cares. If it is attached, and you can find a knob to fit it, go for it. Post back and let us know if successful or not.
