Installed new refit toilet handle on American Standard toilet.new handle has a square nut,old toilet tank has a round hole approx.l" dia. When I snug up retaining nut the handle stiffens and has to be lifted up to lower the flapper,when I loosen the retaining nut the ,the handle is verty loose and sloppy but the flapper works properly.I can not find a handle assembly that will fit this tank or is there and adater sleeve for this??

American Standard toilets tend to not be very 'standard'. You should try to find the handle for that model (written inside the tank). If it's an old AS, try this place:
