I'm replacing alot of wood in my house. I've been using mostly roble oak and staining it cherry. I stained one of the last pieces yesterday and it came out really bad. A ton of blotches. Also light and dark streaks everywhere. I sanded it all off today to restain but I'm not sure how to remedy it. I think it might just be a bad piece but it has some intricate detail so starting over with a new piece is my last option. I could use wood conditioner on the whole piece instead of just the ends but conditioned hardwood always comes out lighter regardless how long you let the stain soak in and it has to match what I have already done. Any ideas? thanks

IMO one of the nice things about stained or natural wood is all the grain and other variations.
Sanding the wood may help it to take the stain a little more uniform. You can also add a little stain to the varnish/poly and paint that piece until it gets dark enough, this will also help hide some of the variations in the wood.
