What in general is cheeper to build a woden deck or a brick patio? (if you are buying mid priced supplies for both)

It probably depends on the elevation of the ground relative to your house floor level.
If it is a walk-out on or near grade, the cheapest would be a concrete paver patio. A deck would kill you with replacement cost since it would not last long without a decent air space (18") to allow it to dry out. Digging down for ventilation is not reasonable unless you have a yard with a steep slope away from the house.
If your floor level is above grade by more than 18" or so, wood is the cheapest.
There is also the possibility of a tiered deck/patio combination.
If you want to spend your FREE time digging holes or filing high enough you can go either way within reason.
