I am adding 8 skylights to an oversized garage we use for other purposes. The rafters are open and the skylights will be curb mounted. There is just the plywood sheathing and asphalt shingles to cut through. No roof structures are in the way (skylights will go between 24" rafters. No ceiling)

question. The skylights are about $120 each but what surprised me was that the flashing kits are half that again. With tax it will be $500 just for flashing. Are those flashing kits necessary? The boxes are sealed so I don't know what's in them. Would it be possible to buy one kit and then just use the pieces to make a template for one's own flashing? If so I could save about $300. Or is it best just to bite the bullet and buy 8 flashing kits?

Obvisously you have to flash the skylites, or you'll have leaks.

There are numerous ways to do the flashing, and most will be cheaper than what the skylite mfgr. is asking. Start in the roofing section of one of the big box stores. You can probably find a sheet metal "el" that is 3" x 3". If not that, then a roll of galvanized tin or aluminum flashing and bend it yourself.

Other than metal, there is vinyl or even 'peel and seal' self adhesive rolls that you could make work.
