Came home today to find the house not cooling down. Air is comming out of the vents but its not cold. Outside unit doesnt work. I have read several posts to what may be the cause. First of all, please tell me where the fuses I need to check are. I know where the main breaker box for the house is. Are there more, and if so where. I have a furnice in my attic, but assume it has nothing to do with the A/C.

You say a furnace up in the attic. That AC coil should be there also as you use the furnace blower for AC. The blower is running you say . So it all in the outside unit you have to check
Now you should have a breaker in the home is all. Some times on old units there can be a fuse out side in a switch box near the unit there.
You have to find out if you have 220V to the unit there and also if the tstat is sending 24V out to it also.

There is a box outside near the unit...As I have no fash light, I will do it tomarrow...What am I looking for and what do I do? I dont know if the fan is movable, I will also check that tomarrow. I have never tryed to fix anything by myself, so any help would be great. If I can get this fixed myself, that would be great.

If you dont know electric I think you should call a hvac tech to look at it. This is 220V you will be into and you need a meter to start to read out what you have and where. You can look into the box out there. See if it has fuses in it .If so ohm them out to see if ok. Or just put new ones in. Look for a breaker in the panel for the AC and try it first. Is the filter in the furnace or for the AC clean????

Thanks for the help, and yes; I will call an HVAC person today. After checking outside today, the unit is humming so I know its getting power. I wouldnt even know if the fuse was bad. Thanks again.

The humming is probably the contactor meaning you are getting 24v. I would reset the breaker(s) and replace any fuses prior to calling. If the fuses are in a pullout at the unit you can yank it and take it to a hardware store. They can check them for you.
