I have a Craftsman Eager-1 (917-373841) that has become unusable. The engine is probably fine but I have no way to start it because the spring in the rewind starter unit (590702) has failed. I've been looking online for a couple hours and have come up with nothing so far. I'd appreciate any helpful suggestions of places to look.

Have you tried craftsman.com? I have (had, it just died) an older model craftsman and found parts there. Also, give Ebay a shot, you'd be surprised what you can find there.

Ebay came up empty on that but I spent a few more minutes on the Craftsman site and figured it out. You kind of have to hone in on major parts and then on the constituent parts. Not the best design I've ever seen but I think I found it. Thanks.

$40 for the spring and the assembly. I guess it's cheaper than buying a new mower.

Since you have a Tecumseh engine part need, why not your local, independent, small businessperson. Your local Tecumseh dealer. For the chassis, you need to find your local AYP/Electrolux dealer. Knowledgeable, friendly, no shipping charges, no-nonsense type of business.

Absolutely Puey, it is nice for both, however to use the parts listing from sears to be able to tell your dealer exactly what part you need. Certainly some parts descriptions can be confusing and even misleading, nice to be able to speak the same tounge. You can also get a quick price reference ;)
