I have a tempstar a/c unit for my upstairs. Last week it quit
working and after some investigation I found the contacts to be
broken. I replaced them with a new unit and now the new ones are arcing badly. This could have been what broke the originals.
The unit will still run but its arcing and the contacts sound awful. Any ideas as to why the contacts want pull in and make
complete contact. Thanks in advance.

I replaced the contacts and they do pull in but they are arcing
and making loud noise. I can hold them in with a screw driver and everything is okay. I'm just confused as to why the brand
new contacts are arcing right off the bat.

See if the transformer is putting out the 24V to it.

I replaced the contacts

Is that all why not a new contactor???

I replaced the whole contactor. I went out this morning and
checked my voltage. I have 24v on the two small yellow wires
and 240v on the large wires. I was curious about the capacitor.
Is this the next place to look or call in the big boys. Thanks
for the help.

Out of the box here. Did you get the right coil for 24 V in the contactor????
Also--- turn fan on at tstat. Then jump R to Y at the tstat. can it be the tstat????

Does the 24V go on and off on it????
Is there a low psi cut out in the unit???

It May Be Crazy But, Could It Be The Blade Connectors.
They Are Somewhat Corroded And A Little Loose Fitting.
I Wiggled Them While The Unit Was Running And The Contacts Pulled Completely In And The Noise Stopped. As Soon As I Let The Wire Go The Contacts Began Arcing Again.

Sure can .Stab on blades dirty. Stab on lose. when you have the quick connectors they have to be tight when they slip on.

Also we find that it pays to bug spray around the condenser now and then . Ants like to get up into the points in the contactor and burn it up.
