This is my first time posting so bear with me. We recently bought a new kitchen table that didn't have much of a protectant coat on the top. So I put one coat of polyurthane on it.Then one night in the midst of a very intense game my husband was using a pen and applied too much pressure to the pen because it created bubbles in the polyurthane protectant coat. The bubbles aren't raised but the polyurthane is not attached to the table in those areas and it is very noticable. Any suggestions for getting rid of the bubbles in the polyurthane? And is there a better solution for protecting the table top than polyurthane.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forums

What kind of prep did you do to the table prior to applying the poly?

Pressure by itself shouldn't have created the bubbles. I believe something that was left on the surface [prior to poly] stopped the poly from adhering.

You should sand the top and sand thru any bubbles, wipe off the dust and repoly. Polyurathane is about as tuff a coating as most diyers will apply.

I did not prep which maybe I should have.

I already tried to sand the spots that have bubbled however the sandpaper seems to scratch the table...

Always sand with the direction of the grain. Start by using as an agressive grit as needed then progessively use finer grit with 180-220 grit for the final sanding. Sanding will scratch the new poly but they should disappear once the new poly is applied.
