A friend told me to finish and install strips of 3/4" x 3/4" on the front of my pocket door frame for trim. He said that the door would be flush with the trim when the door is in the pocket, but my door sits back inside the trim about 1/4".

Is this normal?

I have two more pocket doors that I have not trimmed yet and when I check them they would be the same way after installing the trim. It seems as though I should use 3/4" x 1/2" trim instead of the other.

All I want to know is what is the standard? Is the door supposed to be flush with the trim or should it sit back in 1/4" as mine do?

Thanks...Randy

Randy, quite often the door will sit back a little from the trim. It is not a critical item. You do have a flip up latch to retrieve it from the hole, right? You will want to make sure the door has a receiver trim to go into when it is closed, for privacy. You can cut the trim down to 3/4 x 1/2, but make sure the top trim is deep enough to hide the trolleys, and make sure one side of the top molding is installed last, and screwed in from the bottom with trim screws in predrilled holes, so you can remove it later and adjust the door if necessary.

It's always nice when the door is flush with the trim. Often, a shim can be placed behind the bumper so that when the door is pushed back into the wall it does not go too far back for the trim. Of course, cutting the trim down to 3/4 x 1/2 is also a solution.... it would mean the casing would have a little less to nail to.

Yes, I installed a handle assembly that has the lever as well as a lock, since this door is for a bathroom. I didn't install the receiver trim. The boss said she didn't think it was necessary...she really didn't want it.

I thought about the bumper shim idea, and I may employ it on the remaining doors, but I guess it's all dependant on how accurate my doors are installed. I may want to leave that set back after all is finished.

Thanks guys...appreciate the replies.
