My wife and I moved into a tract house in SoCal about 2 and half years ago. We have two young kids and I have been busy with rewiring the entire house and a master bath remodel. I still do some occassional small projects on both the interior and exterior including landscaping.
My concern is that as I make changes, I am not really following a master plan, but rather just doing enough to get by so I can focus on the rewire and bath. Hopefully, I won't have to undo some of my work so far to keep a consistent look, but I am just guessing that consistency is a big part of decorating. Our tastes are simple, my wife prefers country themes and I like rock and stone on the outside. She really likes green and I tend toward calm and less clutter.
I have read the excellent "Sticky" on Paint Colors and now would appreciate advice on how to get an overall plan that both my wife and I can agree with and follow.

well, obviously you'll have to compromise in order to come to an agreement on how to decorate, if your preferences & tastes are different. you can either each have certain rooms that will be "yours & hers" (which really doesn't make for a consistent look throughout the house) or you can meet halfway in each room, which i recommend.
for example, country decorating doesn't have to be old, dusty & cluttered. there are many different kinds of country.
if she likes green and you don't, instead of painting the entire room green, maybe you could live with just a green sofa.
i think the easiest way to decorate is to take it one room at a time, but build outward to the adjoining rooms, as opposed to trying to plan the whole house right now. start in the room in which you've got a plan. maybe it's the room where you really don't have much of a choice because of some unchangeable factor. make it the best it can be & then do the next room so the 2 go together, but it's more of the look you want. and just keep going from there, room by room. as you go, you may change your mind about things. and depending on whether or not you can actually find the things you want (availability), you may have to tweak your plan a bit and change what you had tentatively planned for other rooms.
to keep focused, clip out pictures of stuff you like & keep them in a folder. when you combine 100 different pictures together, your own unique style will develop, because it will be a combination of 100 different styles. so you're not copying these pictures, you're incorporating something from each picture into your own space.
from experience, the best advice i can give you is "keep your receipts!!!"
